Trail Construction Update

IT’S GO TIME!

UPDATE AUGUST 27, 2024: Construction continues with great earnest and our awesome volunteers are now stepping up to help build boardwalks over sensitive areas of the trail route. Our next opportunity for volunteering is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7. If you would like to help out, please complete the volunteer interest form on our Support page. As you can see from the photos below, many hands make light work!

UPDATE JUNE 18, 2024: Construction has begun and we already are starting to see the trails take shape!

Traction Trailworx is hard at work cutting through and digging into the trail layout. We soon will be calling for volunteers to help with general trail labor during a work bee this summer. Please consider signing up with the form below if you want to help make the trail dream a reality.

UPDATE JUNE 6, 2024: The area in and around Peek-A-Boo Trail has been “closed” for the season effective today while construction takes place on our new recreational trail. Please refrain from visiting the site unless part of an official volunteer work effort organized by Clark Township’s Peek-A-Boo Trail Advisory Committee.

Thank you in advance for understanding as we work to keep everyone safe during construction. We will post trail-build photos as things move along, so please check back here and our Facebook site often this summer. WE ARE GETTING PUMPED!

MAY, 2024: After years of planning and patience, Peek-A-Boo Trails is about to become a reality in 2024.

On March 25, Clark Township, with funding and support from the Michigan DNR, signed a contract with Traction Trailworx, of Madison, Wis., to construct a multi-purpose mountain bike trail on land that includes what is affectionately known locally as Peek-A-Boo Hill. Both an intermediate and a black diamond loop will be developed.

The excitement for this long-anticipated recreational asset in the Les Cheneaux community continues to build, as volunteers and donors begin to see the trail vision become reality. Logging of the trail route took place over the winter and the 4-mile track is now tangibly taking shape.

The Clark Township Peek-A-Boo Trail Advisory Committee will be sharing opportunities for interested community members to join the effort as summer kicks off in the LCI. Worker bees will be actively needed for construction of boardwalks throughout the trail project, and additional donations for materials and trail amenities are still being sought. Stay tuned for updates on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

For now, here’s a taste of what’s to come, courtesy of our trail-builder, Traction Trailworx. Whether you are looking to clean your first bunny hop or shred your hundredth black diamond berm, we are right there with you. And, we cannot wait to get started!

How To Get Involved

Volunteer: There is a niche for every skillset in trail planning, building, stewardship, and maintenance. The Peek-A-Boo Trails committee holds monthly operational meetings and subcommittees meet as needed in areas of specialization. We are actively recruiting volunteers to help in Promotions (Website and Social Media), Trail Maintenance, Fund-Raising, and Event Planning.

Donate: Any contribution is helpful toward creating and maintaining sustainable trails. Monetary donations will be used for items such as signage, lumber/hardware for maintaining constructed features (i.e. bridges, drops, ramps), trail head improvements, and maintenance tools as needed.

Peek-A-Boo Trails Project

Nestled near the shores of Lake Huron, the Peek-A-Boo Trails are located in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. Clark Township, in Mackinac County, is also home to the 36-island Les Cheneaux archipelago and anchored by the two harbor towns of Cedarville and Hessel.

The trails area lies between the two communities just off M-134, a Scenic Byway that runs along the shore from I-75 to DeTour Village (and to Drummond Island). These easily accessible and year-round communities are a 30–40 minute drive from the engineering marvels of the Mackinac Bridge to the south and the Soo Locks to the north (or St. Ignace and Sault Saint Marie).

There’s a lot to explore by turning east in the UP!

Trail Project Objectives

Our goal is to expand all-season outdoor recreation opportunities in the area and develop the first professionally designed and sustainably built mountain bike trail in the Eastern Upper Peninsula. The trails will accommodate biking skill levels ranging from beginner to advanced and feature 3.8+ miles of stacked loops and flow track. The trails will be useable all seasons for other non-motorized uses such as hiking, snowshoeing, skiing, and winter fat-tire biking.
